Chapter 15: Thanksgiving
"Okay," I said.
"Okay?"
"I'll come. If you want me there for you, and not as a shield."
He thought about it, right there in the middle of the gallery.
"Both," he said. "Is that allowed?"
"That's allowed."
Pink went up to seventy-six.
We rode out on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, with a pie from the dining hall bakery strapped to the back in a milk crate.
It survived.
Mostly.
Ruby met us on the porch in pajamas and a winter coat.
"You brought a pie," she said. "Is it store?"
"It's dining hall."
"That's worse than store."
"Ruby," said Jesse.
"I'm being honest. You said honest is good now."
He looked at me.
I looked at the ceiling of the porch.
Thanksgiving morning, the kitchen was full of steam by eight.
Mrs. Rainey had taken the day off from the grocery store, the first day off I'd seen her take.
She handed me an apron that said KISS THE COOK, with the KISS scratched out in marker.
"Jesse did that when he was ten," she said. "He was against kissing."
