Chapter 22: Midnight
I didn't say anything.
I couldn't.
One word from me, one push, one "Jesse, tell me you love me," and the auditor would call it steering.
So I stood next to him in the snow, holding his hand, and kept my mouth shut.
It was the hardest thing I'd done in two lives.
Harder than the dining hall.
Harder than dying.
[Twenty-five,] said the System.
Around us, the crowd was still buzzing about the book, the barrier, the county car pulling out of the lot.
Then some guy near the curb yelled across the bend.
"Hey, Rainey! Does the warden let you kiss her at midnight, or do you need a permission slip?"
A few people laughed.
It was the old joke.
The one from the video.
Jesse's hand tightened on mine.
[Twenty,] said the System.
He let go of my hand.
He stepped up onto the concrete barrier Dane had just hit, so everybody could see him.
The lot went quiet.
They'd just watched him walk away from the wreck of the guy who'd tried to kill him.
They wanted to hear what he'd say.
"You want to know why I did everything she said?" Jesse said.
