Chapter 23: The Truth
I looked at the little glowing square in the corner of my eye.
It looked back.
[You can tell him,] the System said. [Mission's over. The rules went with it.]
"Are you sure?"
"Am I sure about what?" said Jesse.
I put my fork down.
"You're going to think I'm crazy."
"I already think you're a little crazy."
"More crazy."
He leaned back in the booth and folded his arms.
"Try me."
So I told him.
All of it, in the red booth at one in the morning, with the old man snoring next to us.
Twenty-six, the red light, the voice, the job with his name on it.
I didn't skip that part.
He didn't interrupt.
He didn't laugh.
He just watched my face the whole time.
"There's a bar over your head," I said. "There was. Purple. I thought it was love. I spent a year filling it."
"And?"
"This fall the System told me it wasn't love."
"What was it?"
I took a breath.
"Annoyance."
He blinked.
"You were measuring how annoyed I was."
"Yes."
"For a year."
"Yes."
"What was it at? In the dining hall. When you gave the cigarettes back."
