Chapter 20: The Charter

Caspian didn't sleep that night.

He sat in the straw of the end stall with his back against the boards and his father's head on his knee.

I sat beside him.

Around three, he spoke without looking at me.

"You were right," he said. "In the tower."

"I yelled at you."

"You were right and you yelled. Both." He stroked the grey fur slowly. "If I'd forfeited, he'd have won twice. My crown and my father."

"I'm sorry I left."

"You came back to the right place."

He turned his head and kissed my temple, and left his mouth there.

Through the bond I could feel him, raw and wide open.

"I'm not giving you up," he said. "And I'm not giving him the crown. I just don't know how to do both."

"Then we find out how."

"How?"

"He lied about the ridge," I said. "What else has he lied about?"

Caspian went still.

"He read us the charter in front of every pack in the east," I said. "Nobody checked. Nobody ever checks Raife. He's too nice."

He looked at me with my brown in his eyes.

"The Charter Book lives in the college archive," he said slowly. "He'll have put it back."
