Chapter 22: Out of the Flames
I was out of the truck before it stopped rolling.
Caspian was at the big barn doors with a fence post in both hands.
There was a heavy chain looped through the handles.
A new padlock hung from it, shining in the firelight.
"Somebody chained it!" he shouted when he saw me. "From the outside!"
"Where's Grandpa?"
"He went in the side door to open the stalls! He hasn't come out!"
The side door was on the far side, by the feed room.
Smoke was pouring out of it, thick and yellow.
Behind the doors, the wolves were throwing themselves against their stalls.
I could hear the little white one crying.
"Cas," I said. "Stop. The post won't do it."
"Then what will?"
"You will."
Then he dropped the post.
He didn't fight it, and he didn't clench.
He breathed out once, and called.
His wolf came up out of him in two seconds, smooth as water, his clothes splitting off him into the mud.
The black wolf hit the barn doors with his whole body.
He backed up and hit them again.
The left door tore off its top hinge and sagged inward, chain and all.
