Chapter 14: Cash's Visit

I set the bottle back in the crate, red wax up.

Then I turned.

Cash leaned in the study doorway in his officers' team jacket, a clipboard under his arm.

"I leave it for two minutes to take a call," he said. "Two minutes, and the omega's in the cabinet."

"It's my stepfather's cabinet."

"It's my father's medicine."

He came in and shut the door with his heel.

"And you're not his doctor. You're a resident with a library card for a mother."

He smelled like lunchtime beer and, under it, the same bitter green as the crate.

He'd been handling the bottles all day.

My notebook was on the desk where I'd set it down.

He saw it before I could move.

"What's this?" He flipped it open with his thumb. "'Subject: me. Variable: seven alphas.'"

He laughed, delighted.

"Oh, Tenley. You're keeping score."

I went for it.

He lifted it over his head, the way he used to hold my car keys when he thought it was cute.

He paged through it over his head, reading a line aloud here and there in a game-show voice.

"Give it back."

He took out his phone with his other hand and photographed the page.

Then the next one. Then the next.

"This is the funniest thing that's ever happened at this Academy," he said.

"Put it down."

"A defective omega sniffing every alpha in the house with a stopwatch." He snapped another. "No alpha ties himself to that. They'll pass you around like a puck."

"Your father poisons people," I said.

I hadn't meant to say it.

It came out flat, and it stopped him.

For one second his face went completely empty.

Then he smiled and tossed the notebook back onto the desk.

"My father keeps old men alive. Ask your stepdaddy."
