Behind me, Titus dragged the gray blanket over all three of them and said a word I'd never once heard him say on rounds.
Nero was laughing too hard to help.
The old gray wolf didn't look at them at all.
He walked across the clearing to me, slow, stiff in the back legs.
He was bigger than me by half. His muzzle was white, and a long bald scar ran down one shoulder.
He stopped with his nose an inch from mine.
Then he breathed out, warm, and touched his nose to my forehead.
Under the wolfsbane that was almost gone from him now, he smelled like cedar and old paper and my mother.
I didn't know what to do with my tail.
It did something anyway.
One of the twins sneezed with laughter, and the other knocked him over.
Behind me, the blanket heaved, and three more wolves came out from under it.
Nero first, black and lanky, all legs, his split lip still split.
Titus, huge, the color of wet bark, who shook himself like a dog coming out of a lake.
