Chapter 23: Snow

The King laughed so hard he had to sit down.

My mother took the letter out of his hand, folded it into a paper boat and set it floating in the gravy.

Rupert saluted it.

The band started up again, and the north shore Alpha asked my mother to dance, and she said yes.

The snow came the second week of December.

It came down soft and heavy all night and buried the old fire hall up to the bottoms of its red doors.

At five in the morning I was out front with a shovel when a pickup slid into the lot sideways.

A man jumped out in his socks.

"My wife," he said. "She's having the baby. She's in the truck. She's a wolf."

"She's what?"

"She shifted to push. She says it's easier. Now she can't shift back."

"Mom!" I yelled up at the window.

My mother came down the stairs in her pajamas and a headlamp.

She'd been sleeping in my spare room since the storm closed the road to the Hall.

The wife was a big red wolf in the back seat of the pickup, panting, with her ears flat.

We got her onto the horse blankets in the left bay.

Rupert came in from the Hall at half past five with chains on his tires, because he'd heard it on the pack line.

"Is it coming? Is it actually coming? Can I hold something?"

"Hold her head," my mother said. "And make that noise."

He knelt by the wolf's head and made the sound in his chest, the one he'd used on the highway.

The red wolf sighed and closed her eyes.

At six ten a pup slid out onto the blanket, wet and blind and about the size of a loaf of bread.

It squeaked.

The father sat down on the concrete in his socks and burst into tears.

My mother cleaned its face with a towel.

"First one," she said. "First one ever born in a station."

Rupert wrote the time on the whiteboard in big letters and drew a paw print after it.

Nobody made him take it off.

At ten the radio called us out for a car in a ditch on the Enumclaw road.

My partner was on a day off, so he drove.

The rig skated down the hill with chains on all four tires.

It was a human woman, seventy, upside down in her sedan in the snow, hanging from her seat belt and furious about it.

A gray wolf was already there, standing guard over the car with its hazards blinking.

He shifted back when he saw us, naked in the snow, and said, "I didn't want to leave her."

My partner threw him a blanket.

"Good man," he said. "Now hold the door."
