Chapter 5: Gloves

"Try harder," I said, and went back to scrubbing.

He stayed crouched there for a long minute.

Then he got up and walked out of the bay without another word.

When I came out at five, there was a mug of coffee on the hood of the rig, still hot.

The next morning I went out to my truck and dug through the junk behind the seat.

I found my old leather work gloves, the ones I wore for vehicle extrications, stiff and stained with motor oil.

I put them on and wore them to breakfast.

Leander looked at them across the table, then at me.

"Expecting a car wreck?"

"Something like that."

Rupert laughed into his orange juice so hard it came out his nose.

That afternoon my mother asked me to drive her down to the clinic in Enumclaw.

She said she needed to check on a mare.

She really needed to get out of that house.

The clinic was a low tin barn at the edge of town with her name painted on the side and a line of horse trailers in the gravel lot.

It smelled of hay and disinfectant.

She walked straight to the back room and put her hand flat on the stainless steel table.

"This is where I met him," she said.

"I know, Mom. Naked guy, coffee."

"You know the funny part. I've never told you the rest."

She sat on a stool and pushed her reading glasses up into her hair.

"When I set that leg, he was awake the whole time. A wolf that size should have taken my arm off. He just watched me. When I finished, he put his head down on my hand."

I leaned on the counter and listened.

"And the next morning, when he was a man, he cried. Did you know that? He said nobody had touched him that gently since his wife died."
