Chapter 15: The Price
We left the Grand through the loading dock, because Inga said no one watches a loading dock.
She was right.
By one in the morning the three of us were in a corner suite across the river.
Inga had booked it in her own name, and the curtains were pulled.
The woman from the suite sat on the bed in the gray coat with a glass of water, shaking.
Inga stood guard at the door with a hotel iron in her hand.
I sat in the armchair with my right hand in a towel full of ice from the machine in the hall.
My knuckles had swollen into a purple mitten.
Nobody had followed us.
Nico had gone out through the ballroom with a napkin over his face, and nobody in that family would touch him.
The knock came at ten past two.
It was three knocks, slow and even.
"It's him," Inga said, with her ear to the wood. "He's alone."
"Let him in."
"Are you sure?"
"I sent him the file."
She opened the door and stepped out of the way.
Carmine stood in the corridor in the shirt he had worn to the gala, with the mark of my hand still faint across his cheek.
