Chapter 17: The Don's Shame

I drove.

Carmine's right eye was swollen shut, and he sat in the passenger seat of his own car holding his ribs.

"Let Inga take you to a doctor," I said.

"After."

"After what?"

"After you've asked him."

He looked out the window at the lake going by, black and flat.

"He won't answer you the way you want, Cassie."

"I know."

"He never has."

"I'm not going for an answer. I'm going so he has to hear me say it."

The housekeeper at Deerpath took one look at Carmine's face and stepped aside for both of us without a word.

Sergio was not in the study.

He sat in the glass sunroom at the back of the house, in the dark, in a chair with a blanket over his knees.

Rain had started against the windows.

On the wall hung a portrait of a handsome woman in a blue dress, with the twins' dark eyes.

The oxygen machine hummed beside his chair, patient as a clock.

"You did not knock," he said.

"I didn't have to. I'm family. You told the whole Table so, today."

"I told them no such thing."

"You let the Table be satisfied. That's the same."

"Carmine," the old man said, not turning his head. "Wait in the hall."
