Chapter 25: Open House
The realtor staged the Point house in two days, with rented furniture and a lot of cushions.
She put a leather sofa in the front room and a pot of fake lavender on the kitchen counter.
She made up the bed in the little back bedroom with white linens and a throw.
"It's the only room that looks finished," she said. "Keep them in the front and the back."
"Why?" I said.
"Because the kitchen looks like a crime scene."
On Saturday morning at ten, a gray sedan with Connecticut plates pulled into the dooryard.
I stood in the front room in my good coat, trying not to throw up.
A retired couple got out, both in their seventies, he in a tweed cap and she in a quilted vest with a camera on a strap.
They shook my hand.
"We saw the audio," the wife said.
"I'm sorry?"
"The radio. On the internet. You're the boat couple."
"No," I said. "I'm just the seller."
"You're the one who said the dock thing," said the husband, kindly.
I opened my mouth, and the front door banged.
Gordie came in, in a flannel jacket and a baseball cap pulled down.
He was followed by Paulie in enormous sunglasses and a scarf over her hair.
The petty officer, the Hannaford manager and the hardware man came in behind them.
"Hello," said Gordie, loudly. "We're the neighbors."
"Gordie," I said.
"We're just checking on the roof."
"You're not the neighbors. You're Gordie," I said.
"I'm a neighbor named Gordon."
