Chapter 19: Valerie's Last Card
Colton read the card over my shoulder in his shirtsleeves and his bare feet.
"She slid that under your door," he said. "While we were in your bed."
"Yes."
"She had a man on your porch at four in the morning."
"She has a man everywhere."
He set the card on the hall table very gently.
"I'm going to put my fist through something," he said.
"Not my wall."
"Your wall is safe."
He put on his coat and I put on a robe.
We went into the kitchen to wait for the doorbell, because I knew it would ring.
It rang at eight.
Valerie stood on my front step in a cream coat with a leather folder in her hand.
Behind her at the curb stood a car with its engine running and a driver who looked straight ahead.
"Good morning," she said. "I brought breakfast." She held up a white paper bag. "Almond croissants. Colton's favorite."
