Chapter 20: The Engagement Party
The actress pressed play on my front step, and Valerie's voice came out of the little phone speaker.
"You took the money to marry him, you never met him, you hate him. If he asks about the veil, cry."
A man's voice answered, dry and exact.
"The notary page is clean, Valerie. Nobody gets past the stamp."
"And if the detective talks?"
"Then she's a woman who takes bribes," Dennis Cobb said. "We have the photographs."
The actress stopped it.
"There are nine of those," she said. "I'll say every word in front of anyone."
Behind me, Colton was standing in the dark hall in his shirtsleeves.
He had heard all of it.
"Saturday," he said.
On Saturday night the Cobb Ballroom shone.
Two hundred people in black tie stood under three chandeliers, holding champagne.
I stood in the service corridor behind a pair of gilt doors, in the black dress I had worn to my grandfather's funeral.
