Chapter 6: On Stefan's Drive

I put my coat on over my pajamas and went down the white stairs before I could think.

The gravel hurt through my slippers.

Blaine's truck sat at the end of the drive with its headlights on the garage door.

Leah got out of the passenger side first.

She had a suitcase in one hand and a grocery bag in the other.

"Winona," she said. "I'm so sorry. I told him it was too late to come."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because I knew you'd need Maxine's things." She held up the suitcase.

"I packed her good jeans, her chargers, and the blue dress for the banquet."

"You went into my house?"

"Blaine let me in. I didn't want her to go without."

Blaine climbed down from the driver's side and slammed the door.

He had not shaved since Friday.

"How did you find us?" I said.

"It's a small town. Half of it saw you walk out."

"And the other half?"

"Heard it from the first half."

He tried a smile and it didn't hold.

"Winona, come on. Come home. You've made your point."

"I wasn't making a point."

"Then what were you doing?"

"Leaving," I said. "I'm done, Blaine."

The light over the garage stairs clicked on.

Stefan came down three steps and stopped on the fourth.

He was in a gray T-shirt and flannel pants.

He was barefoot on the boards in six degrees, and he did not say a word.

Blaine saw him and went red from the collar up.

"Is this the coach?" he said to me. "Is this where you've been?"

"It's where the pipes didn't burst."

"You're staying with Maxine's coach?"

"I'm staying in an apartment I pay rent on."
