Chapter 10: What He Knew

I did not speak to Darian in the car.

I did not speak to him in the hall of the cliff house, or on the stairs to his study.

He opened the door for me and I went in, and I waited until he had closed it behind us.

Then I turned and hit him across the face.

The sound was loud in the quiet room.

His head turned with it, and he stood there with a red mark rising on his cheek and did not lift a hand.

"You let me walk into that garden," I said. "You let me put that ring on my finger three years ago, and you stood at the gala with your card and you said nothing."

"I did not know you then."

"You knew what it was!"

"Yes."

"You said I owed you a dance and a favor, and all the time you knew they were using me up. You let me stand there and think it was *me* who was too sensitive."

"I never said that."

"You said nothing!" I shouted. "That's worse!"

"If I had told you in the helicopter," Darian said, very quietly, "you would have gone straight to Crowhurst and saved him out of pity. You are the kind of woman who would. I wanted you to leave because you were finished, not because you were afraid he would die."

"That wasn't your choice to make."

"No."

"And you wanted him ruined."

"Yes," he said. "I wanted that too. I won't lie to you about it."

I stared at him.

His cheek was red and his eyes were black, and he was still standing perfectly straight.

"The favor," I said. "You said you were saving it for a day I couldn't be talked out of something by a clever line. Is this that day?"

"Rosalind..."

"Because I'm not going to be talked out of this one."
