Chapter 13: The Guest of Honor
Nobody laughed, and that would have been easier.
The microphone gave a small electronic hiccup, and my voice came back at me from four speakers.
"My name is Dara Salter," I said. "Until a Sunday in March three years ago, it was Dara Kellerman."
Somewhere near the back a glass tipped over, and nobody went to pick it up.
Tom stood a yard from me with his fingers still curled around a microphone that was no longer there.
"My husband was driving, and he was unhurt," I said. "He told a trooper I was the woman who burned, and then he flew home."
Four hundred people had stopped breathing at the same moment, and I could hear the air conditioning.
"I paid the forty-eight thousand dollar bill myself," I said.
A woman at table three put down her napkin.
"Now I'd like to talk about the baby."
