Chapter 15: Friday, March Twelfth
I read it standing in the lobby, because I wanted the doorman to see my face while I did.
"My mother lands at six," Tom said, while I turned the page. "She's coming to the house. She wants to look at you."
"Then I'll come to the house."
"Dara, you don't have to."
"At ten o'clock," I said. "Lena will be there, and so will you, and you'll say what's in this envelope out loud."
He opened his mouth, and for once he closed it without arguing.
At seven the next morning I stood in my kitchen in a gray suit with the envelope on the counter.
Bernadine sat at the glass table with her cane across her knees.
Emil leaned against the refrigerator with his arms folded and his coffee untouched.
"Read it to us," said Bernadine.
I did, flat.
"In re the marriage of Thomas R. Kellerman and Dara L. Kellerman. Petition for dissolution."
"Signed Friday, March twelfth, at four forty in the afternoon."
"Two days before the crash," said Emil quietly.
"He asks for no fault. He offers me half of whatever the company gained in value during the marriage, and his own lawyer wrote the figure at the bottom."
