Chapter 24: Salter
The glass man was already on his ladder when I stepped off the elevator on the thirty-first floor.
He had a squeegee and a tin of silver leaf.
A woman with a cane had told him he would not be paid if one letter drifted.
"Left a hair," said Bernadine, from behind me.
"It's straight, ma'am."
"I said a hair."
He sighed and moved it a hair.
I walked down the hall in flat boots with my left knee clicking, and I didn't try to stop it.
Nobody on the floor looked twice.
They had stopped looking in the second week, when the story broke a third time and then went on to someone else.
The door to the corner office was glass, as it had always been.
For three years the silver letters on it had been small.
Now they ran the width of the pane.
GILCHRIST & SALTER.
I stood in front of it for a while.
The ladder creaked behind me.
"You'll want the second line," Bernadine said.
