Chapter 11: Not on This Beach
Hester came across the bay on the first ferry, grey in the face and out of breath.
"Garrick has gone to the border," she said. "The northern Alpha called him out at dawn, in front of the whole pack."
Wynne put down her cup.
"He can't win."
"No, he can't."
"Then why go?"
"Because he's an Alpha, and an Alpha who refuses a challenge has no pack by nightfall." Hester wrung her shawl. "They say he went out without his sword."
Bram was already pulling on his coat.
"I'll bring wolves."
"This is Ashfall's business."
"Your pack is going to watch their Alpha get killed, Wynne. It's everyone's business."
She picked up her jacket.
They crossed the headland at a run, Wynne and Bram in front, and twelve Saltmarsh wolves behind them.
Her legs had never moved like this.
She heard the crowd before she saw it.
The Ashfall border was a wide strip of beach hemmed in by dunes, and three hundred wolves stood on the sand, in a ring, in dead silence.
On the far side stood the northern pack, thirty strong and heavily built, with a scarred grey Alpha at their front.
In the middle of the ring was Garrick.
He was on his feet, barely.
He had stripped to the waist, and there was blood down his face from a split brow.
His left arm hung at a strange angle.
The northern Alpha stood over him, huge and relaxed, and rolled his shoulders.
"They told me you were a legend," he said. "They told me nobody had put you down in eight years."
"Come and try," said Garrick.
"I've been trying for a quarter of an hour."
