Chapter 14: The Time It Takes

Wynne did not sleep.

Before dawn she knocked on Bram's door and told him to take her to the headland.

He did not ask why.

They climbed it in the grey light, with the wind pushing at their backs and the whole bay laid out below.

At the edge of the grass she stopped.

Under her was the tidal beach, and the dark patch of sand where the waves had come in.

She could see the rock where Calla had sat.

She could see the marks of the dune path.

It was close.

It was so close she could have thrown a stone onto the sand.

"You told me it was too far," she said.

"Wynne."

"I crossed forty yards of sand yesterday and nobody saw me go. I've been running since the Stone, and I know now how fast a wolf runs this hill."

"I know."

"How long would it have taken you? From here."

Bram stood beside her and did not answer.

She turned and looked at him in the grey light, at the scar through his eyebrow and the grey at his temples.

Last night, on the road, she had wanted his mouth.

She still wanted it.

That made this harder.

"How long, Bram?"

"The time it takes to say your son's name three times."

She stopped breathing.

"My patrol was on the border line below us," he said. "Twelve wolves. I saw the boy go down to the tide on his own from here, and I saw Garrick run into the water for Calla, and I saw the wave."
