Chapter 6: The River Room

"Here's how this is going to go," I said.

I was kneeling in the middle of the double bed in Granny Yocum's river room, in nothing but the Hearth Chain.

It was Monday night, and the room was a screened porch over the Jacks Fork with a kerosene heater and eleven quilts.

The river ran loud and black below us.

I swung a knee over him and then the other, and I lowered myself until I knelt with my thighs on either side of his head.

I faced Tobe, and I could feel Jubal's breath against my skin.

"Oh," Jubal said, in a different voice.

"Don't talk."

"Yes, ma'am."

His hands came up and closed on my hips, and his tongue slid into me.

Tobe caught my shoulders and steadied me.

"All right?" he said.

"Don't you start."

Jubal licked me long and slow, with a patience I would not have believed, and he hummed while he did it.
