Chapter 12: The Sitting
The sun came up over the eastern ridge at six-forty, red and low, and the pack came up the hill to meet it.
Dell had phoned the Stump.
By the time the first light touched the Standing Stone there were sixty wolves on the grass.
They wore coats and slippers and pajama bottoms, and some of them carried thermoses.
Orrin sat on a rock at the edge with his son beside him.
He had stopped talking at about four.
Soren caught my hand before Sigrid stood.
"Listen to me first," he said, low.
The silver crescent between our palms was quiet now, a warm weight.
"My grandmother told me the line when I was twelve."
"She made me swear never to say it while Orrin lived."
He swallowed.
"I never thought it would matter, because nobody had touched an Alpha in two hundred years."
"You said 'Caught.'"
"I said it because I knew what it meant."
"At the creek."
"I knew when you dropped out of the tree."
My heart was beating very hard.
"You walked down that bank like a man on a Sunday stroll," I said.
