Chapter 16: The Olha
Nahia's POV
Aritz barred the cellar door at nine, as ordered, and unbarred it at midnight, and looked hard at the wall while I went out.
"Mind the third gate," he said. "The hinge sings."
I took his lantern and went up through the snow.
It was the sixth night of it.
The Bell-keeper had asked that the Alpha keep away from the trespasser's door, and Unai had kept to the letter of that by sleeping in the olha with the rams.
The olha was the winter hut above the last pasture, a low stone room with a stove and one bunk, and a ram's pen along the back wall.
A lamp burned in the window.
He opened the door before I knocked.
"You are not supposed to be here," Unai said.
"I'm a trespasser. It's what I do."
The snow was in my hair and my eyelashes.
He stood in the doorway in his shirtsleeves, with the stove glowing red behind him, and looked at me and said nothing at all.
I stepped in and shut the door with my back.
He kissed me before it clicked.
His mouth was hot, and mine was frozen, and he warmed it slowly with his lips and tongue until I made a sound.
His hands came up under my cape and held my ribs.
"You're frozen through," he said, against my mouth.
"Then warm me."
"Yes."
He pulled the cape off me and hung it on the peg.
He sat me on the edge of the bunk and knelt on the stone floor, and began on my boots.
He unlaced them one at a time and drew them off, and the wet stockings after, and wrapped my bare feet in his hands.
His palms were hot from the stove.
He rubbed my left foot slowly, the arch and the heel and each toe, and I closed my eyes.
"Where did you learn that?" I said.
"From the ewes. They come in lame."
"Don't tell me I'm like a ewe."
"You're nothing like a ewe," he said. "A ewe doesn't swear at me."
