Chapter 20: Candlemas
We came down into Haizpea at noon with the bells unwrapped.
Twenty-nine people from the Hollow walked in a long line behind Unai and me, and every one of them rang.
Thirty wardens walked beside them with their staves held upright.
The valley stood under the elm among the trestle tables, two hundred people in their Candlemas black, and they turned their heads to the sound.
I saw mothers go white.
I saw a man drop his glass.
I saw a woman in the second row put both hands over her mouth and say a name.
A stout figure in a black scarf broke out of our line and ran.
The Bell-keeper rose from his chair under the elm with the book in his hands.
"The Batzar sits," Beñat said, pleasantly.
"By the law of this valley, an exile who comes home is killed at the elm.
"That woman is Nahia Iribarne. The Alpha has kept her in his tower and in his bed."
Nobody spoke.
"And the morning after she slept under her father's roof," Beñat said, "a lamb was found torn on her door."
A murmur ran through the square.
"Eleven houses came back with her," he said. "And with them, the killing."
