Chapter 11: Stonegate Hall

I woke up alone in his bed with my body aching in places I had not known could ache.

His scent was on the pillow.

I lay there and stared at the ceiling and thought, very clearly, that I had slept with the Alpha King.

Then I thought about the name he had said in his sleep.

I got dressed and went downstairs to find out whether I was brave enough to ask.

The Keep's kitchen was full of noise.

Toby sat on the counter with syrup on his chin, Selma was flipping pancakes in a borrowed apron, and Emmett sat at the table with a bag of frozen peas on his black eye.

"There she is," Emmett said. "The woman who made the King put his hands in the air."

"Who told you that?"

"The warriors. They've been talking about it since the gate. They say he sat in a hallway all night with his hands up so he wouldn't touch you."

"I fell asleep on him."

"It's a love story," Selma said, and flipped a pancake. "It's the best thing anyone here has heard in years."

"It is not a love story."

"The warriors have a pool," Emmett said.

"A pool on what?"

"On how long until you say yes to the mark."

I took a pancake off the plate and ate it so I would not have to answer.

Toby held out his fork with a piece on the end.

"Macy, Piers's not a doggy," he told me with great seriousness. "He's a wolf. He said."

"I heard."

"He said I can ride him when I'm bigger."

"He did not."

"He did," Toby said. "He said it this morning."

Mom was at the far end of the kitchen with a cup of tea going cold in her hands.

She had not spoken since we arrived.

I sat beside her.

"Mom."

She looked at me, and her eyes were red.
