Chapter 18: Trap
Osmond's men found the maid's bed at noon, and under the straw of the tick they found a small blue glass bottle.
"No maid," Osmond said, setting it down on the captain's plank table. "But this."
I held it to the window.
It was the size of my thumb, stoppered with wax, and the glass was smeared on one side with a dark, greasy print.
I tilted it, and in the light the print turned blue-black.
"That's monkshood tincture," I said. "And that's a fingertip."
"Whose?"
"The one that's stained."
The captain leaned his elbows on the table.
"We cannot go to the Seal with a bottle and a smudge," he said.
"Brangwen will say the maid dropped it, and the maid is gone."
"I know."
"Then what is it worth?"
"Everything, if she thinks it is."
They both looked at me.
"Sunniva has one night before her vote," I said. "She cannot let anyone read that print."
"If she knows where it is, she will come for it herself."
