Chapter 24: First Human Healer
I ran the whole length of the Long Hall and out into the cold, and my uncle caught me at the bottom of the steps.
He smelled of flannel and diesel and old coffee.
He lifted me off my feet.
"You're thinner," Mort said into my hair. "They aren't feeding you."
"They are feeding me."
"Then what's this?"
"A king," I said, and he laughed so hard he had to put me down.
Behind him stood the pups' nurse, wiping her eyes, still hiccuping with laughter, with a battered truck steaming in the yard.
"He would not wait in the cab," she said. "He rang the bell for ten minutes."
"I was getting the lay of the land," said Mort with dignity.
Haldane came down the steps slowly, with his arm in its sling and a grey-eyed boy of about three riding on his hip.
The boy had hold of his ear.
Mort straightened, a stooped man in suspenders, and the king of Greyhollow stopped an arm's length away.
"Mr. Linde," Haldane said.
"Your Majesty."
"Mort will do."
"Haldane will do."
They looked at each other.
"Is he good to you?" Mort said, to me, without turning his head.
