Chapter 18: Banished

The knife came out of her sleeve fast.

It was a thin silver blade, no longer than a hand, and she had it up before anyone shouted.

She did not go for the Elder or for Gideon.

She came across the floor straight at me.

"You took everything!" she screamed. "Six years I built it, and you took it with a letter!"

I could not get up. I was wedged between the bench and Bess, with my hands on my belly.

I saw the blade flash and I thought only one thing.

Not the baby.

Then something huge hit her from the side.

Gideon had come over the rail in one leap, and the change took him in the air.

His shirt tore. Black fur ran up his arms. By the time he landed he was a huge black wolf, and he took Delaney to the stone floor under his full weight.

The knife skittered away and spun to a stop against Bess's boot.

Bess put her foot on it.

"I've got it," she said calmly.

Delaney thrashed, and the wolf did not move.

He held her down with one paw on her chest and his jaws an inch from her throat, and he made a sound in his chest that shook the benches.

"Gideon," I said.

His ear twitched toward me.

"Gideon. Let the Council do it."

He looked at me with his grey eyes in the great dark head.

Then he lifted his paw, and Toby and two wolves hauled Delaney upright and pinned her arms behind her.

The change ran back out of Gideon in a rush. He stood bare to the waist, breathing hard, in torn trousers.
