Chapter 7: Borrowed Strength

The next morning, Verity Marrow came to Silverfen alone.

She walked up the gravel road in a long gray coat, with a leather satchel on her shoulder and her hands held open at her sides.

The Silverfen wolves at the gate did not let her pass.

"Tell her I'll meet her at the creek," I told Wystan.

"That's a trap."

"It's daylight and she's alone. Let me hear what she wants."

He frowned, but he walked me down to the water himself and stayed under the trees.

Verity was waiting on the stone bridge with her coat pulled tight.

She did not look like a Luna.

Her face was gray, and her eyes were red.

"Thank you for coming," she said softly. "I wanted to say I'm sorry about the other night."

"Which one?"

"All of it. I never wanted to hurt you."

"You said that the first time."

"This time I mean it." She wiped her cheek. "Joran is dying, Ilse."

I said nothing.

"He can't eat. He can't shift. He fell on the stairs this morning, and the healers can't tell us why. Osric says only one wolf alive can help him."

"Me."

"You." She stepped closer. "You don't have to forgive him. I wouldn't. But come to the pack house for one night, and let Osric look at you. He'll tell you what you are, who your mother was. He has answers you've wanted your whole life."

"Why would Osric know?"

"He's the elder. He knows everything about this pack."

That was true, and it hurt.

All my life I had wondered whose daughter I was.

"If he knows, he can tell me here."

"He can't. It has to be done at the pack house, with the records." She put her hand on mine on the railing. "Please. Do it for the child you saved. For the whole pack."
