Chapter 21: Torin's POV: Louder

Torin's POV

I climbed the Ridge Stone at first light and sat on the cold rock with my arms around my knees.

I had not slept.

Hedda had gone to sleep against my shoulder with her hand over my heart, and I had lain beside her and listened to her breathe.

At four I got up and dressed in the dark.

I did not wake her.

The wind came off the hills, smelling of snow.

Below me the Ridge lay quiet, the hall and the barn and the Den with its porch, and two hundred Saltclaw wolves asleep in the field in whatever blankets my sisters had found them.

I thought about what Bjorn had said in the truck.

You can't lead both.

I knew what it meant, and I had known since the Gathering.

Hedda held the Voice, and the Voice sat with the Shore.

Its wolves were hers.

Her mother was theirs, and her grandfather, and the cold store that she would never be able to stop hearing as a hole in the world.

My wolves were mine, and they were loud and good, and I loved every one.

And the Ridge was the only thing I had left from my father.

I heard boots on the gravel behind me.

It was my younger sister, in her coat over her nightdress, with two mugs of tea.

She climbed up and sat beside me without a word and gave me one.

"You've got the face," she said.

"What face?"

"The one you had when Mother left. The one where you decide it's your fault."

"It's not about that."
