Chapter 13: Morning Rules

I woke on the bearskin at six with snow light on the rafters.

Lorcan was already awake, propped on one elbow, watching me sleep.

He had pulled his flannel shirt over my shoulders sometime in the night.

"Good morning," he said, low and careful.

"Don't look so worried."

"I'm not worried. I'm waiting for the rules."

I sat up, and the shirt slid off the silver crescent on my shoulder.

His eyes went to it and stayed there.

"What rules?"

"You told Bess you'd learned to wait," I said. "So you've been waiting for me to write them down."

His mouth twitched.

"A month of mornings," he said. "I figured you'd want terms."

"I want terms."

We walked back to the ranch house through the first real snow, and I wore his boots.

The kitchen was empty and warm, and somebody had left the coffee pot full.

I found a legal pad in the drawer by the stove and a pen that worked.

I hopped up onto the counter beside the sink, bare legs swinging, his flannel hanging to my thighs.

"Stand there," I said, and pointed to the floor in front of me. "Please."

He stood.

I wrote at the top of the page, Morning Rules.

"One," I said. "You ask before you touch me, every day, even if you touched me all night."

"Yes."

"Two. You say what you want out loud. Not what you think I want."

"Yes."

"Three. When I say go ahead, you do not apologize for enjoying it."

He let out a short breath that was half a laugh.
