Chapter 15: Between Them

Jarrett's POV

I had stood in that road all night, and I had never been so sure of what to do with my feet.

I walked past Faye and stood in front of her.

"Move," she said behind me.

"No."

"Jarrett."

"No," I said.

The Redfern Alpha looked at me with something close to wonder.

"Alpha Brandis," he said. "You're on Ironwood's road, in yesterday's clothes, defending the woman you humiliated my daughter for."

"I'm defending her from a lie," I said. "She never took it."

"Your own stand-in says she did."

"She's not my stand-in. She's Faye's."

I looked at the witness.

She stared at the ground.

"I'll hear this at the Stone," I said. "Not on a road, and not with forty wolves."

"You gave up the right to tell me where I hear things." He lifted two fingers. "Take her."

The heavy man with the gray crew cut stepped out of the line first.

He had brought the servant's dress to Ironwood three weeks ago, and he was grinning.

I put out an arm to keep Faye behind me.

He came in fast and swung his fist at the side of my head.

I went for my wolf, the way I had done ten thousand times.

Nothing came.

The fist landed above my ear, and the road tilted.

I stayed on my feet.

"Jarrett," Faye said.

"Stay behind me."

"You can't even shift."

"I know," I said.

A second wolf hit me low in the ribs, and something cracked.

A third caught me across the mouth.

I tasted copper and spat it into the gravel.

Behind me, I heard Darek's boots hit the road.

"Stay on your side, Wardell," I said without turning.
