Chapter 23: Under the Moon
On the night of the full moon, I walked out onto the cliff lawn behind the manor in a white dress, with the ring on my hand and no shoes.
For thirteen days Corbin had stood behind my chair.
He had carried my messages and signed the mines over to the trust, and he had never once come closer than three steps.
He walked behind me now, a long way back, with his hands empty.
The moon stood huge over the water.
It poured silver across the grass and the old stone circle at the cliff's edge, and I felt it pulling in my blood.
I stopped in the middle of the circle.
"Come here," I said.
He crossed the grass slowly.
He stopped at three steps.
"Closer."
He came to one.
"Closer."
He stood in front of me, near enough that I could feel the heat of his chest.
"I told you once that I wanted to be asked," I said.
"You did."
"Ask me now."
He looked into my face.
His eyes were full of the moon.
"Cassandra Greaves," he said. "I was a coward and a fool, and I took everything you gave me for granted. I'm not asking you to forget it."
"Good."
"I'm asking if you'll let me be yours. Not your mate, not your husband. Yours. For whatever you'll have of me."
"For how long?"
"As long as you want me," he said. "Even if it's only a day."
The wind pressed the dress against my legs.
The ring on my hand glowed bright and warm.
I cupped his jaw, and he leaned into my palm with his eyes closed.
"I choose you," I said.
His breath broke.
"Not because the Elders say so, or because fate says so," I said. "Because I've watched you for thirteen days, and you never once asked me for anything. I choose you, Corbin."
He kissed me.
It was a slow, shaking kiss, and I held onto his collar and kissed him back until the moon felt like part of us.
His hands came up to my waist.
His hands tightened on me.
His mouth went down my throat, and I tilted my head to let him.
He found the place on my neck where my old mark had been, and he stopped.
"It's gone," he said.
"Make a new one."
"Not mine. Yours." His voice shook. "You mark me, Alpha."
