Chapter 7: Severance Finalized

The penthouse was silent when I came back, and every light in it was off.

I took off my coat and sat down on the couch in the dark.

My phone lit with an encrypted email.

The buyout for my private medical patents had cleared: eighty million dollars, in an offshore account that carried no name but mine.

I had built those patents myself, before Corbin, in my father's old lab.

With that money I could leave the coast for good and build a lab of my own on the far side of the country.

I would not owe the pack one more dose, and I would not owe Corbin anything at all.

I set my phone down and took out the folded copy of our severance decree.

His signature sat at the bottom, a wild black scrawl from a month ago.

I added mine under it, neat and small.

I laid the paper flat on the marble coffee table, where he could not miss it.

On the table beside it, a digital clock counted the last minutes of the Moon Goddess's thirty days.

I watched the numbers drop.

When they reached zero, a single line lit up on the clock: Severance Finalized.

Then the pain came.

It exploded at the crook of my neck, where his mark was, and tore down through my whole body.

I doubled over and clutched my chest.

The backlash of ripping a soul bond in half was a thousand times worse than anything I had read in the old texts.
