Chapter 14: The Offer
The Ashcrest hall smelled of roast venison and woodsmoke, and it was the loudest room I had ever sat in.
Two hundred wolves crowded the long tables under strings of paper lanterns.
The twelve Alphas of the circle had the high bench, and the Blackmoor council sat at the far end with their sleeves still smelling of the ridge.
Fergus had laid a carved chair for me at his right hand.
I walked past it and sat on a bench at the foot of the hall, between the humming old man and a woman holding a toddler on her knee.
"You're in the wrong seat, Warden," the old man said, without looking up from his plate.
"I'm in the one I picked."
"Good answer."
He slid me a boiled potato, and I ate it.
At the end of the Blackmoor table Eamon sat with his bare hands flat beside a bowl of stew.
The heavy ring was gone from his finger.
Nobody was talking to him, and he was not asking anyone to.
A Garland girl climbed onto the bench beside him and said something I couldn't hear.
