Chapter 16: The Bite

The strip went so quiet that I heard frost cracking in the grass.

I turned my head and looked at Eamon.

I asked him nothing with my face.

I would decide what to believe by what I could check.

"I have never bitten anyone," Eamon said. His voice was flat and steady. "Not her, not anyone."

"You'd say anything to keep your seat," Dacia said, her eyes wet and bright.

"I threw my seat away a minute ago."

"Because you knew I'd stand up."

Half the benches murmured over that.

"I'd like someone who knows teeth to look at it," I said.

My voice came out calm.

"Ashcrest has a healer-wolf who has set every kind of bite in this county."

Fergus lifted a hand, and a wiry grey woman in a patched parka came through the crowd, chewing a toothpick.

Dacia stepped back.

"I won't be handled like a horse," she said.

"You bared it yourself," said the east-range Alpha, and her voice was iron. "In front of the circle. You'll be looked at."

The healer did not touch her.

She bent close and breathed in once through her nose, then again, with her eyes shut.
