Chapter 28: Blood Moon

Orla's POV

Four hundred wolves stood on the hill when the moon came up red.

They stood outside the silver ring in a great crowd, tower wolves on the left and Lowell families on the right.

Between them, with their backs to the river, were the six who had come to burn my hall.

Their children were on their shoulders.

I stood at the north pillar in my mother's green dress, with Torin on my left and Joss on my right.

My ring finger was bare.

The Elder came into the circle leaning on his stick.

He stopped in front of me and looked at my hand.

"Thirty days," he said, so the hill could hear.

"Luna Lowell, has the ring been on your hand at any time since the Harvest Moon?"

"No."

"Does any wolf here say otherwise?"

The hill was silent.

"Alpha Kensington," said the Elder. "Do you stand by your signature?"

"I do," Torin said. "I'd sign it again."

The old man bowed his head.

"Then by the law of the first Kensington, the marriage of Torin Kensington and Orla Lowell is ended," he said. "At moonrise. Witnessed."

The moon cleared the pillars.

Something let go in Torin.

I felt it through the rope behind my own ribs, a long slow tearing.

He caught his breath and shut his eyes.

His hand on mine went tight.

"I'm here," I said.

"I know."

Then Winifred stepped into the ring.

She wore white, as the healer does on a Blood Moon, with her silver-streaked hair down her back.

Behind her, two of her wolves led Camille in white as well.

Camille's hands were bound with a ribbon. Her face was blank.

"I ask the pack's patience," said Winifred. "A wolf that has been moved against its nature must be eased home. It is the healer's office. I will ease it."
