Chapter 17: The Father
Luke was already reaching for his khakis.
I put my hand on his arm.
"Stay here," I said.
"He's my father."
"And it's my stand."
He looked at me for a long moment, with his hair sticking up and no glasses on.
I could see what it cost him.
He sat back down on the edge of the bed.
"He'll be polite," he said. "That's the worst part. Don't let the polite fool you."
"I've been engaged to polite."
I pulled my sundress on and his sweatshirt over it.
I didn't fix my hair.
There wasn't time, and anyway I wasn't going to fix my hair for him.
I walked up the slope through the wet grass with my sneakers in my hand.
The sun was coming up over the bay behind me.
He watched me come the whole way.
He was sixty-something, tall, with silver hair and a tan from somewhere with boats.
His suit didn't have a wrinkle in it.
He looked at the sweatshirt.
He looked down the hill at cabin three.
Then he smiled at me.
"Good morning," he said. "You must be the pie girl."
