Chapter 22: The Conservancy
"You threw a woman off the porch," I said. "For offering you money."
"For offering me the wrong kind." Gran's voice was getting stronger, the way it does when she's annoyed. "She didn't want to buy the farm. She wanted to buy the right to build on it."
"What does that mean?"
"It means we keep it. We farm it. We own every tree. But nobody can ever put a house on it, or a road, or a hotel. Not us, not you, not anybody. Forever."
I sat back in the plastic chair.
"And they pay you for that?"
"A great deal, she said. Because the land's worth more to a builder than it is to a farmer, and they pay the difference."
"Gran. Why on earth did you say no?"
"Because your grandfather was alive and the cherries were good and I didn't want some woman in a fleece vest telling me what I could do with my own dirt." She looked at the ceiling. "I was proud. I was a fool. Write it down, you'll never hear me say it twice."
"Do you still have her card?"
"In the coffee can."
"Behind the filters?"
