Chapter 4: Party of One

At four o'clock on Saturday, two hundred people were sitting under the cherry trees.

Nobody had told them anything.

I hadn't told them anything.

I'd slept two hours on the couch, showered, and put on my dress.

Gran zipped it up the back without saying a word.

Then she pinned my veil and handed me the shoebox.

"You sure?" she said.

"No."

"Good. Nobody's sure who's doing it right."

The string quartet from the high school started the processional.

I stepped out from behind the barn.

The whole bridal party was standing at the arch.

All of them.

The bridesmaids in dusty rose with their bouquets.

The groomsmen in gray, grinning at each other.

Kelsey in front, maid of honor, my veil's twin pinned in her own hair.

And Shane at the end of the row in his tux, hands folded.

Last night was a bad dream I'd wake up from on the walk.

His best man leaned over and whispered something.

Shane smirked.

Megan stood at the far end of the bridesmaids, staring at the grass.

I walked down the aisle alone.

Nobody gave me away.

Two hundred heads turned to watch me do it.

I could hear the gravel under my shoes and the bay behind the trees.

At the arch, I didn't stop next to Shane.

I walked past him, to the officiant, and held out my hand.

"Can I borrow that?"

He looked at Shane.

Then he gave me the microphone.

"Hi," I said.

It boomed off the barn.

"Thank you for coming. Last night my bridal party played a game. They each wrote down one thing they always wanted to say to me. I thought you should hear them."
