Chapter 12: Why It Won't Stop
Nobody asked me why I had cried in the tub, and by seven that morning I could not stand it.
The four of them had gotten me out of the water, and dried me in towels, and driven me home in Taras's truck with the heater on high.
Abram had carried me up the stairs.
Garnet had put a blanket over me, and Anders had sat on the floor by the bed until I fell asleep.
Now I sat at the kitchen table in Garnet's flannel shirt with a mug of tea, and all four of them sat around me with their coffee going cold.
Taras had burned the toast.
Nobody had mentioned it.
Abram's phone buzzed on the table.
He looked at the screen, and his jaw went tight.
"It's the owner," he said.
"Put it on speaker," I said.
He looked at me.
"Put it on speaker, Abram."
He did.
"Captain," said a dry, heavy voice, and the whole kitchen went still. "I'll be brief. I've told you the date. I'll tell you why I'm calling."
