Chapter 13: Hold Still
I slept through Wednesday, and when I woke it was dark and all four of them were in Abram's bed.
It was a king, and it held five if nobody minded an elbow.
Nobody did.
I lay in the middle with Abram's chest against my back, and Garnet's hand on the blanket near my hip.
Taras was on my other side, awake, watching me and saying nothing.
That alone told me how bad the day had been.
"Nobody is fast tonight," I said.
My voice was rough from crying.
"Nobody does anything I don't ask for, and I'm going to ask slowly."
"Slow is good," Taras said, very softly. "I can do slow."
"You cannot," said Anders.
"I can try, kid."
I turned onto my back and looked at the water stain on the ceiling.
"Anders," I said. "Come down here."
He went red to the hair, but he came.
He knelt between my knees in the lamplight and put both his big hands on my thighs, and he was shaking.
"I don't know how to do this part right," he said.
"You do it right if you mean it. You mean everything."
He lowered his head.
His mouth was warm and uncertain, and the first touch of his tongue was so light that I sighed.
He licked me in small careful strokes, and when I made a sound he went back to the same place and stayed.
He kept his eyes up on mine the whole time.
Abram's hand moved over my hair and down my arm, and Garnet took my left hand and laced his fingers through mine.
Taras bent and kissed my right breast, once, without drinking.
