Chapter 22: The Stone
The technician turned the screen toward us on the nineteenth of May.
There was a small gray shape on it with a light inside that flickered.
I was lying on the table with the gel cold on my stomach.
Abram sat on the stool at my head, and he had my hand in both of his.
He had asked to be the one.
Taras, Garnet and Anders stood against the wall, because the room held three people and a fourth had been a negotiation.
"There," the technician said. "That's the heartbeat. Strong and fast, just as it should be."
A sound filled the room, fast and wet and steady.
It was the smallest, quickest sound I had ever heard.
I looked at Abram.
He was watching the screen with his lips parted.
I had seen him sit in a penalty box in front of three thousand people and not change expression.
