Chapter 23: The Summer Table
I opened the envelope on the seawall at six in the morning on the fourteenth of September.
Caspar was still asleep in the big four-post bed, and I had stepped around the housekeeper on the stairs in my bare feet.
The bay was flat and silver.
I broke the seal with my thumb.
There was one sheet of paper, folded around something heavy.
"To the woman who broke it," the note began.
"If you are reading this, you didn't keep your contract. Thank you."
"I have been wrong about most things that mattered. I was right about one. My grandson does not need a partner on paper. He needs a person who will stand up at my table when he can't."
"There is no money in this envelope. You've had enough of that."
"The other thing was my wife's. She used it to find her way home from every place I took her. It points north even when you don't ask it to."
