Chapter 24: The Marigold
At nine the next morning, everyone who had sat at that table stood on the dock.
The housekeeper had put on her church dress.
The trustee wore her green raincoat, though the sky was clear.
The eleven board members had brought their coats.
The aunt and the cousin stood together at the rail.
Cressida stood a little apart, in a navy sweater, with a pair of yellow dish gloves sticking out of her back pocket.
My mother had driven in at eight with Lucy, in the rusted minivan, and had inspected the boathouse.
"Wooden boats leak," she told the trustee. "Somebody ought to have wet her down."
"The groundskeeper ran a hose in her for a week," the housekeeper said.
"Good," said my mother, and nodded as if that settled the matter.
The big boathouse doors stood open to the morning.
The Marigold waited on her sawhorses, white and green, with her dented bow toward the slip.
Caspar stood beside her with one hand on the rail.
