Chapter 23: The Dress on the Ice

Alba's POV

I told the director yes at seven in the morning, and he said he had never been so relieved to hear anything.

I came out of the radio hut with a signed offer folded in my pocket and my knees weak.

Iker was standing on the walkway in the dark.

He had no hat, and his hair was full of frost.

"How long have you been out here?" I said.

"Since you went in. I counted the steps. I wanted to be where you came out."

I walked into him.

He held me.

Then he stepped back, took my hands, and went down on one knee on the iron grating.

"Iker, it's minus thirty."

"I know. I've got about a minute before my knee freezes to the floor. Let me say it."

"Say it."

"I've been practising the wrong sentence," he said. "I tried 'it makes sense,' and 'in the circumstances,' and 'I'd be honoured.' None of them were true. The true one is short."

His grip tightened.

"I want to wake up every day and hear which direction you are in the room. I want you to read to me when I ask and tell me to read it myself when I should. I want to be your husband while you run this station. Marry me, Alba. Not because I owe you. Because I can't stand the idea of any other morning."

I could not see him clearly.

I realised that I was crying again, and that I did not mind.

"Yes," I said.

"Yes?"

"Yes, you ridiculous man. Get up before I have to carry you."
