Chapter 4: The Mobile

I walked out of Northlight with the folder under my arm.

Virginia let me take it. She said she had copies.

I called Mitchell from the ferry dock. He didn't answer.

I texted him a photo of his own signature.

Four minutes later he wrote back.

"I can explain. I'm coming home at seven. Please be there."

At seven-fifteen the door opened.

Mitchell came in first.

Blair came in behind him, holding a white bakery box with a gold ribbon.

I was standing in the kitchen. I didn't move.

"Val," Mitchell said. "Blair wanted to come. She wants to clear the air. We all do."

"Get her out of my home."

"It's not really your home, though, is it?" Blair said pleasantly. "Northlight pays the lease. So technically it's ours."

"Blair." Mitchell gave her a look.

"Sorry. Sorry." She held up the box. "I brought lemon tarts. From the French place on the Wharf. Pregnant women love lemon."

She set it on my counter and slid it toward me with one pink nail.

I didn't touch it.

"You signed it," I said to Mitchell. "Monday. Before any of this."

"I signed so she'd stop." He came around the counter. "You don't know my mother. If I'd said no, she'd have gone to court for custody the day the baby came. With our lawyers. With her judges."

"So you gave her my daughter to keep her busy."

"I gave her a piece of paper. Nothing's final without your signature. It bought us months."
