Chapter 5: One Suitcase

Mitchell came back in with his phone in his hand.

"Okay. Sorry. That was her father's assistant."

Blair was already beside him, arm through his, face soft.

"We should go, Mitch. I think I upset her."

"Say it again," I said.

Blair tilted her head. "Say what?"

"What you just told me. Say it in front of him."

Mitchell looked from her to me. "What did she tell you?"

"She told me she was never pregnant."

It was very quiet.

Then Blair's chin started to tremble.

It was like watching a tap turn on.

"Why would you say that?" Her eyes filled. "Why would you say that to me? I lost that baby. I bled for two days, Mitchell. You were there."

"She just said it," I said. "She put her mouth on my ear and said it."

"I told her I was sorry about the mobile!" Blair was crying for real now. "That's all I said!"

Mitchell put his arm around her.

He looked at me over her head.

He didn't look angry.

He looked tired.

"Val. Come on."

"She said it, Mitchell."

"You've had the worst two days of your life. I know. I did that. But you can't say something like that about a woman who lost a child."

"I'm not making it up."

"I didn't say you were making it up. I said you're upset. You're six months pregnant. The doctor said your hormones..."

"Don't."

"You cried at a dog food commercial last week."

Blair made a small noise against his coat. It might have been a sob. It might have been a laugh.
