Chapter 21: The Driveway
Davin came on New Year's Eve, at twenty to midnight, in a rented car.
We heard him before we saw him.
The engine ran too long in the driveway, and then a door slammed, and something heavy sat down on the porch steps.
Jonas and I were on the couch with the baby asleep upstairs and a bottle of cider between us.
I had my feet in his lap.
He had been rubbing my arch with his thumb, in a slow circle, for an hour.
The thumb stopped.
"Stay here," he said.
"No."
"Marty."
"It's my porch," I said. "I want to hear what he says."
He looked at me and gave a short nod.
We opened the door together.
Davin was sitting on the top step in a blue sweater gone gray at the cuffs, with a bottle of something brown between his shoes.
He had not shaved in two weeks.
His eyes were red and slow and very bright.
